US Vice President JD Vance met at the Vatican with Pope Leo XIV, to whom he delivered an official invitation to visit the United States.
The White House spokeswoman said Pope Leo hosted Vice President Vance for an audience at the Vatican this morning.
"It was a good and productive meeting," said Caroline Levitt. The spokeswoman explained that Trump hopes to see Leo XIV in Washington "as soon as possible."
Vance, who was sharply criticized by the late Pope Francis for the Trump administration's tough immigration policy, handed the Pope a letter, saying it was from US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump, who "invite you to come."
The Pope, sitting across from Vance in his office in the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican, received the letter and was heard to say: "perhaps."
The Vatican did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the invitation.
The Holy See confirmed in a statement that Vance and Pope Leo met, but did not provide details about their discussions. A spokesman for Vance said they met face-to-face before being joined by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also Catholic.
As part of the meeting, Vance gave Papa Leo a dark blue and orange jersey from the American football team Chicago Bears, which bore the name "Papa Leo" and the number "XIV".
After meeting with Pope Leo, Vance met with officials from the Vatican Secretariat of State, the Church's top diplomatic office. A Vatican text described the talks as "cordial."
"There was an exchange of views on several current international issues, which require respect for humanitarian and international law in conflict zones and the finding of a solution through negotiations between the parties involved," the text of the Vatican statement reads.
