President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, have begun a telephone conversation between themselves in the context of achieving peace in Ukraine.
White House officials confirmed to Reuters news agency that the Trump-Putin phone call is underway.
International media reports that the conversation between the two presidents was positive and is expected to have a positive outcome, while a meeting between the two Presidents has also been discussed.
As CNN reports, Trump is also expected to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky immediately after the call with Putin, as well as with European NATO leaders.
According to CNN, Trump is open to a meeting with Putin, however, "everything" remains on the table, even secondary sanctions, while the American president is expected to make statements immediately after the calls.
Moscow conditions
According to the Kremlin, the main conditions set by Putin include:
Complete withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbass and "Novorossiya"
Abandoning Ukraine's NATO membership ambitions
Lifting all Western sanctions against Moscow
Kiev's commitment to neutrality and a non-nuclear regime
Full protection of the rights of Russian-speaking citizens in Ukraine
The White House says that US President Donald Trump's "goal" for today's phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin is to achieve a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Ahead of Trump's call with Putin, US Vice President JD Vance said Washington acknowledges there is an "impasse" in talks regarding the war in Ukraine.
"I think the president will say to President Putin: 'Listen, are you serious? Are you honest about this?'" Vance told reporters aboard Air Force Two as he prepared to depart from Italy.
"Putin doesn't seem to know exactly how to get out of the war in Ukraine," Vance said, adding that if Russia is not willing to move beyond past mistakes, eventually the US will have to say "this is not our war."
"It's Joe Biden's war, it's Vladimir Putin's war. It's not our war. We'll try to finish it, but if we can finish it, eventually we'll say, You know what? It was worth trying, but we're not going to do it anymore," he said.
