"Temperatures are rising"/ The UN Weather Agency warns of a "red

Rising temperatures should prompt a global "red alert", the United Nations Weather and Climate Agency said on Wednesday, after records were broken again in August.

The world has again registered a record in average August temperatures, for the second time in a row, preliminary data from an agency of the European Union for Climate have shown. Australia, Japan and parts of China and Norway recorded the hottest August on record, according to meteorological agencies.

"It is clear that temperatures are rising beyond what we would like," said Celeste Saulo, head of the World Meteorological Organization.

"This is happening because our action is not enough."

Although the exact global average temperature for this August is not known, the EU Meteorological Service has said that the figure will be above last year's record - 16.82 degrees Celsius. Saulo has called for better monitoring and support for weather agencies, as he believes "more resources are needed".

While attending a forum, she announced that Singapore will be the regional center for monitoring pollution caused by farmland fires and smoke. Being only one of two such centers in the world, this center will provide more qualitative information about fires and pollution forecasts./ REL
