Crazy conspiracy theories/Trump boycotts G20 summit

Trump canceled his participation in the G20 summit months ago. Vice President JD Vance was supposed to go to South Africa instead. But now even that doesn't seem possible...

US President Donald Trump is threatening South Africa with a boycott of the G20 summit to be held this month in Johannesburg. In a post on the TruthSocial platform, the Republican again accused the country of killing white farmers and illegally seizing their land. Trump offered no evidence and continued: "As long as these human rights violations continue, no representative of the US government will attend." Trump called it a "disgrace" that the G20 summit is being held in South Africa.

The Group of 20 major industrialized and emerging economies includes 19 countries, the European Union and the African Union. Members include major Western democracies such as the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom, but also authoritarian states such as Russia, China and Saudi Arabia. The summit is scheduled for November 22 and 23.

Trump had canceled his attendance in early September. Instead, he wanted to send Vice President JD Vance. But with Trump's new threat, it's now unclear whether that will happen.

There have long been political disagreements between the US and South Africa. In May, Trump publicly humiliated South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during his visit to the White House. The US president had already leveled baseless accusations against his guest, claiming that South Africa was committing a “genocide” against white farmers.

South Africa has denied the accusation. Experts dispute Trump's portrayal of an alleged genocide in South Africa. Moreover, the images Trump presented to Ramaphosa in May as evidence of his claim did not originate in South Africa, but in Congo.

However, the US president has repeatedly complained about discrimination against white minorities in South Africa, especially the so-called Afrikaners, who are descendants of Dutch settlers who ran the racist apartheid regime in South Africa until the early 1990s, a regime that systematically discriminated against the majority black population.

Trump concluded his post on TruthSocial by saying he was looking forward to hosting the upcoming G20 summit in Miami, Florida. According to his previous statements, one of his golf resorts is scheduled to host the summit.

The US president had assured everyone at the time that he would not make any money from it. The luxury Doral resort near Miami is very close to an airport and was the "best location" for the summit in December 2026.

The Washington Post had reported at the time that Trump had already planned to host a G7 summit there during his first term - but this had drawn criticism from many quarters.
