The tragic toll from the fire in Kočani, North Macedonia, deepens even further, as another injured person has died today.

29-year-old Aleksandar Gavrillovski, who was being treated in Lithuania, lost his battle for life. The news was announced by the Minister of Health, Arben Taravari, according to whom two other patients are in critical condition.

The death toll reaches 60. The March 16 fire, which killed mostly young people and left nearly 200 people injured, erupted when a firecracker caused a blaze at a nightclub in the eastern city of Kocani.

The most seriously injured have been transported to hospitals in several European countries, with assistance provided by the EU.

The Pulse nightclub was later found by authorities to have had numerous safety and licensing violations. Thirty-four people are in custody over the fire, including a former finance minister and seven senior police officers. State prosecutor Ljupco Kocevski said the suspects were being investigated for offences that carry sentences of up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Authorities in the small Western Balkan country of about 1.8 million people said last month they had closed dozens of nightclubs and entertainment venues after the fire.

Several protests have taken place across the country as well as in neighboring Greece, with demonstrators calling for justice for the deaths.
