Spain will not authorize the use of joint military bases or airspace for actions related to the conflict.

Spain has decided to close its airspace to US military aircraft involved in operations against Iran, strengthening its opposition to the war and deepening rifts with the United States. The news was first reported by El País and confirmed by Defense Minister Margarita Robles.

Robles said Spain would not authorize the use of joint military bases or airspace for actions related to the conflict. She described the war as "deeply illegal and unjust," underscoring Madrid's clear position.

The decision means that US military aircraft, including those stationed in the United Kingdom and other European countries, will have to change routes to avoid Spanish territory, except in emergency cases.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has taken a strong stance against the war, calling on the US, Israel and Iran to stop the conflict. He has stated that one violation of international law cannot be justified by another.

Spain's refusal to allow the use of military bases has sparked a backlash from US President Donald Trump, who has threatened to cut off trade relations with Madrid.

Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said the decision is in line with the government's policy of not participating in a war launched unilaterally and in violation of international law.

The Spanish government had previously signaled this stance, rejecting flight plans related to the conflict, including refueling missions.

However, US aircraft can continue to use bases in Spain for logistical purposes, in accordance with bilateral agreements that support the presence of about 80,000 US troops in Europe.

In late February, several US refueling planes were moved from bases in Spain to France and Germany. Spanish authorities also clarified that the flights reported by other media were military transports and not part of combat operations.

According to The Guardian, the use of Spanish bases for direct attacks on a third country has only been recorded during the Gulf War in 1991.
