US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that President Donald Trump favors diplomatic solutions in confronting Iran, while confirming the existence of ongoing contacts between the parties.
In an interview with Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra, Rubio said that communications are taking place between the US and actors inside Iran, mainly through intermediaries. He added that a diplomatic solution had been possible earlier.
"President Trump always prefers diplomacy and always prefers to achieve a result, and we could have done this earlier ," Rubio said.
Rubio accused Iranian authorities of using the country's resources to support groups such as Hezbollah, Hamas and Shiite militias in Iraq, increasing tensions in the region. He stated that the United States would support any development that would bring a leadership with a different approach to the future of Iran. Speaking about regional security, Rubio stressed that Iran should not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons and should stop activities that, in his opinion, include sponsoring terrorism and producing weapons that threaten neighboring countries.
He added that Iran's short-range missiles pose a threat to Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. Rubio demanded that Iran take concrete steps to abandon its nuclear program, as well as stop producing drones and missiles, stressing that the risk of a nuclear-armed Iran remains unacceptable to the United States.
"The Iranian regime can never obtain nuclear weapons and must stop sponsoring terrorism and producing weapons that threaten its neighbors. The short-range missiles launched by the Iranians have only one purpose: to attack Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. The Iranian regime wants to possess nuclear weapons to threaten and blackmail the world, but we will never allow this to happen. The danger it poses is too great. Iran must now take concrete steps towards abandoning its nuclear program and any ambition to possess nuclear weapons," Rubio added.
