Wagner's short-lived rebellion in June had far-reaching consequences for its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, as well as for Russian "Czar" Vladimir Putin.
The uprising followed months of outbursts from Prigozhin to Russia's defense ministry.
He had repeatedly claimed that his Wagner mercenary group fighters, who were deployed to Ukraine as a private military group and instrumental in many of Russia's battlefield successes, were being treated unfairly by Moscow.
Prigozhin shared harrowing videos of himself standing in front of Wagner's troops, claiming Moscow had failed to provide them with enough equipment and ammunition.
Tensions eventually rose when Prigozhin accused Moscow of deliberately shelling his forces and announced that a rebellion was starting.
"There are 25,000 of us and we are coming to solve things... Those who want to join us, it's time to end this mess", declared Prigozhin at that time.
The next day, Wagner's fighters moved into Russia's Rostov-on-Don, a key city near the border with Ukraine, and claimed to have taken control of all military facilities in the area.
The troops then began a march towards Moscow in what was described by the British Ministry of Defense as "the most significant challenge to the Russian state in recent times".

Putin appeared in a televised address to the nation, calling the uprising a "stab in the back".
That evening, Prigozhin ordered his mercenaries to halt their march on Moscow and return to their field camps to avoid shedding Russian blood.
Although it is not entirely clear how the rebellion ended, it is believed that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko intervened to broker a deal between the two sides.
As part of the deal, Prigozhin was sent to Belarus. His Wagner group appeared to be slowly disintegrating, with some fighters sent to Africa, others to Belarus, and others incorporated into Russia's armed forces.

At the time, Putin appeared to have spared Prigozhin despite his usually ruthless responses to perceived traitors.
But many experts warned that it was only a matter of time before Prigozhin became useless.
