The MAGA movement had just warned of a tougher language in the wake of Kirk's murder. This is allegedly leading to violence, especially on the left. Just days after the memorial service for the brutally murdered political activist, a Trump supporter is already causing a scandal.
The presenter openly called for an attack on the UN headquarters, although he used a joke.
Fox News host Jesse Watters fantasized about a bombing or possible gas attack on the United Nations headquarters in New York.
Watters's disturbing remarks were prompted by a minor incident during US President Donald Trump's visit to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. An escalator at the UN building on the East River stopped while Trump was using it, forcing him to climb the stairs himself.
The right-wing presenter, who is considered close to Trump, then commented on this on his show as an "insurrection", adding: "This is an insurrection and we should either leave the UN or bomb it. But it (the UN) is in New York, right? Maybe there's collateral damage. Maybe gas them?"
The United Nations reacted with particular indignation to these statements. "It is neither ridiculous nor ironic to call for the bombing, the gas attack, the destruction of this building where thousands of people work," UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said during a press conference in New York.
The organization has been the target of deadly attacks several times in its history. "We know painfully what happens when the UN is threatened," Dujarric stressed, citing personal experience: "we lost friends in Baghdad. I personally walked through the ruins of the building in Algiers where the UN was bombed."
A bomb attack on the UN mission in Iraq in 2003 killed a total of 22 people, while in 2007 a car bomb in Algeria killed 17 UN staff members providing humanitarian aid.
After the public outcry, the presenter tried to exonerate himself.
"We were in touch with Fox News and Mr. Watters contacted one of our colleagues and apologized," the UN spokesman said. It's unlikely he will face any further consequences, considering his statement and the verbal outburst from one of his colleagues: Just two weeks ago, Brian Kilmeade called for the killing of homeless people, then apologized and has since carried on as if nothing had happened.
