'Betrayal of humanity', UN chief on Gaza war: Suffering, destruction

The United Nations aid chief has called the war in Gaza a "betrayal of humanity" as the conflict between Israel and Hamas reaches its six-month mark.

The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, in a statement issued today, said that the situation in Gaza has reached a dire point.

"Rarely has there been such global outrage over conflict, with so little seemingly being done to end it and instead so much impunity ," he said.

The aid chief said a moment of remembrance and mourning "is not enough" and instead called for an accounting as the people of Gaza face "death, destruction and now the imminent prospect of a shameful man-made famine". .

He also expressed deep concern about the "already fragile" aid operation in Gaza, which is constantly undermined by bombing, insecurity and lack of access.

The statement comes after a week in which the death toll in Gaza passed 33,000 and an Israeli attack killed seven World Central Kitchen aid workers, an incident the IDF said was a "serious mistake".

"On this day, my heart goes out to the families of those who were killed, injured or taken hostage and to those who face the special suffering of not knowing the plight of their loved ones ," Griffiths said.
