Russian spies have been working at NATO headquarters for years. According to the head of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, they have been active in Europe for years.
He said that Russian secret agents had been kicked out of the headquarters in Brussels after being discovered.
"In fact, we have established that they were carrying out activities that were not actually diplomatic work, but intelligence work. This is an issue that is being raised between NATO allies," Stoltenberg told Bild.
He clarified that Russian spies have apparently been active in many European countries for many years.
"We are taking measures to make it more difficult for Russian intelligence services to conduct illegal activities between or within NATO allies. So, as soon as we stand together, we are safe," Stoltenberg said.
This comes after Ukraine warned that Germany is "full of Russian spies".
Ukrainian national security adviser Oleksiy Danilov said they were "vulnerable" to espionage.
"We have warned our German partners many times about the Russian espionage network that is very active in Germany. It is well known that the Russians are eavesdropping on the conversations of German officials and we think this is not the last conversation they have," he said.
Meanwhile, it is suspected that there are likely hundreds of spies based in the UK and hiding in Suburbia, and are almost impossible to spot.
Sleeper agents are leading seemingly innocuous lives, blending into the neighborhood while helping to facilitate espionage activities.
Five suspected Russian spies, Bulgarian nationals Orlin Roussev, Bizer Dzhambazov, Katrin Ivanova, Ivan Stoyanov and Vanya Gaberova, are currently awaiting trial at the Ministry of the Interior on charges of espionage. /The Sun
