A serious incident has shaken the quiet community of Soci, a village near the Italian town of Bibbiena, in the province of Arezzo, today. A 2-year-old child, Leonardo Ricci, tragically lost his life in the courtyard of the “Ambarabà Ciccì Coccò” nursery school, after the lace of the shirt he was wearing got tangled in a tree branch, strangling him.
The incident occurred this morning, around 11:30 a.m., on a sunny day, when the children were taken outside to play in the grass. According to preliminary evidence, it appears that the toddler was running in the green yard when the cord of his shirt got caught in a branch, tightly tightening around his neck. Within seconds, the child lost consciousness and fell to the ground.
Teachers who were nearby immediately responded, attempting to provide first aid, while one of them notified the emergency services. An ambulance immediately arrived at the scene, while the medical team attempted to revive the child for more than an hour. A Pegaso emergency helicopter was also dispatched to help, but was unable to intervene after doctors on the scene declared him dead.
The tragedy has shocked the entire small community of Soci. Leonardo's parents, a young couple in their 20s and 30s, as well as his grandparents, were confronted with the terrible news in broad daylight. "It's unbelievable, a two-year-old child can't die like this," said relatives and neighbors through tears.
Residents of the area have gathered near the nursery to express their sorrow and condolences for the Ricci family, well-known and respected in the community.
Immediately after the event, the Bibbiena company's carabinieri arrived on the scene, who isolated the play area and removed the staff and other children.
The Arezzo prosecutor's office, led by prosecutor Julia Maggiore, has opened an investigation into manslaughter (omicidio colposo), while the kindergarten has been placed under seizure to determine responsibilities and analyze the safety conditions of the environment.
According to sources from the Municipality of Bibbiena, the nursery will remain closed for at least a week, until the investigations are completed.
