Novi Sad tragedy, former Serbian minister arrested at Belgrade airport

Serbian police have made numerous arrests in connection with the tragedy at the Novi Sad railway station, when 16 people were killed by the collapse of a concrete shelter on November 1, 2024.

Six people have been arrested so far, including Tomilsav Momirovic, Minister of Construction and Infrastructure for the period 2020-2022. Momirovic was arrested at Belgrade airport shortly before boarding a flight out of the country, Serbian media reported.

Police tried to arrest another former minister, Goran Vesic, but he was not at his home. It was announced today that Vesic was rushed to hospital last night and underwent surgery.

Goran Vesic held the portfolio of the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure from 2022 until mid-November 2024, when he resigned due to the tragedy at the train station. The deputy minister of the same ministry was also arrested, as well as executives of companies involved in the reconstruction-renovation of the railway station.

The arrests were ordered by the General Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime, which is investigating possible corruption during the reconstruction of the railway network from Belgrade to the border with Hungary.

The prosecutor's statement says that the arrested people, as well as five other wanted people, are suspected of "financial irregularities with the aim of obtaining personal benefits." It also says that their actions caused a damage of 115 million dollars to the budget.

The deaths of 16 people at the Novi Sad train station have sparked a storm of reactions. Students are protesting, demanding political and criminal accountability, and are blocking public university faculties until November 2024.
