A serious rail accident occurred this evening in the Baden-Württemberg region of Germany, where a passenger train derailed in the Riedlingen area, Biberach district. The incident occurred at around 18:10, while about 100 passengers were traveling on the train.
According to German authorities, the accident has caused several fatalities and dozens of injuries, while rescue teams have pulled out several passengers trapped inside the carriages. Police and firefighters confirmed that hundreds of emergency personnel, including medical helicopters and specialized teams for mass rescue operations, have been deployed to the scene.

Initial photos show deformed and overturned carriages, with extensive structural damage. The train, which was operating on the regional line, ended up off the railway bed, creating a difficult situation for the rapid evacuation of passengers.

The causes of the accident are not yet clear. Investigators are examining the possibility that weather conditions, which were unstable with strong storms in the area, may have influenced the incident. Technical failure or human error is also not ruled out. The official investigation is expected to last several weeks.

Local authorities have set up an emergency plan, while injured passengers have been transported to nearby hospitals. Germany's Transport Minister is expected to travel to the scene overnight, while Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed his condolences and solidarity with the families of the victims.

This is the worst rail accident in Germany in recent years, following the tragedy in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 2022.
