Historic US-EU agreement reached...
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump have reached a historic trade deal between the European Union and the United States today, EU sources confirmed after a meeting in Scotland.
According to Trump, the new agreement foresees a fixed tariff of 15% on European products entering the US market, as well as purchases of American weapons by EU countries. "This is the largest trade agreement ever reached between the two sides," he said, describing it as an important step towards balancing trade exchanges, reports "Corriere Della Sera".
The US president stressed that the most contentious point during the negotiations was “fairness”, citing the obstacles facing US exports of cars and agricultural products in the European market. “We asked for fair trade and we got it,” Trump said.
" The European Union will agree to buy $750 billion worth of energy from the United States. They will agree to invest $600 billion more in the United States than they are already investing ," he said.
The threat of imposing 30% tariffs from August 1 had strained US-EU relations in recent months, with Brussels preparing countermeasures on 93 billion euros of American goods.
Von der Leyen, who had described Trump as a "tough negotiator and deal-maker" before the meeting, called the agreement a step forward that "restores balance and provides new stability in transatlantic trade relations."
