US President Donald Trump said in Scotland that trade tariffs on the European Union will not fall below 15%. The statement came ahead of a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, where a comprehensive US-EU trade deal was discussed.
"Better, meaning lower? No," Trump replied when a reporter asked if the tariffs could be more favorable to the EU.
Von der Leyen confirmed that the parties have a 50% chance of reaching an agreement, stressing that any compromise would be based on “fairness and balance.” She called Trump “a tough negotiator,” but said the potential deal “would be the biggest and most important one yet between the US and the EU.”
Trump added that there was a "good chance" of reaching a deal and that only "three or four" issues remained to be resolved, mainly barriers to exporting American cars and agricultural products to the EU. He stressed that a possible agreement would be final and would not be open to renegotiation "for years."
The US president also clarified that the pharmaceutical sector and agreements on aluminum and steel will not be part of this agreement.
The meeting is taking place as the US government maintains high tariffs on European exports and seeks a renegotiation of trade terms, while the EU hopes to avoid escalating the tariff war and secure wider access to the US market.
