Justin Trudeau will resign as Canada's 23rd prime minister today. After nearly a decade in power, Trudeau will formally resign, which he first announced in January during a meeting at Rideau Hall.

Trudeau is the man who brought the child benefit to Canada, legalized marijuana, led the country through the COVID-19 pandemic, and faced harsh criticism in subsequent years over issues ranging from the carbon tax to housing affordability.

According to a senior government source, he will meet privately with the Governor General, Mary Simon. During this meeting, he will formally resign and recommend that she invite Mark Carney to form the government and introduce the new cabinet.

He will be replaced by newly appointed Prime Minister Mark Carney. Five days after a landslide victory in the Liberal Party leadership race, Carney will take the oath of office and loyalty and present his new cabinet to Simon in a ceremony expected to be more modest than Trudeau's grand inauguration in 2015.

Local media have confirmed some major changes that Carney will make to his first team, as he aims to significantly reduce the overall size of the cabinet, which is largely seen as a pre-election cabinet.
