The idea of a 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, already accepted by Kiev under American mediation and now being evaluated by Moscow, looks increasingly bleak.
Putin gave a half-answer: neither "yes" nor "no." "Let's see," was the Kremlin chief's response, a reaction that infuriated Zelensky.
Fighting continues on the ground and a mandatory evacuation has begun in the Ukrainian region of Sumy.
Ukrainian authorities have ordered the evacuation of eight localities near Russia's Kursk region, where Moscow's forces have made significant progress in recent days, pushing Ukrainian troops towards the border. "Due to the deterioration of the operational situation in the region and continued shelling, today it was decided to carry out the mandatory evacuation of the population of eight localities" in Ukraine's Sumy region, its military administration said on Facebook.
Instead, Kiev launched a drone attack on an oil products depot in Tuapse, in southern Russia on the Black Sea coast. “The Kiev regime attacked the facility last night and one of the tanks containing gasoline caught fire,” Kondratyev was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.
Regarding the ceasefire, Putin explained that he "supports" the idea, but there are a number of "nuances" that still need to be analyzed, and in any case any ceasefire should be "such as to lead to long-term peace and address the root causes of the conflict."
The details for Russia will have to be worked out in "further consultations with the United States," possibly at the presidential level. But for now, no new phone conversation between the two leaders is planned.
"Putin, of course, is afraid to tell President Trump directly that he wants to continue this war, he wants to kill Ukrainians," the Ukrainian president said in his evening speech.
Right now, we have all heard from Russia Putin's highly predictable and manipulative words in response to the idea of a ceasefire on the front lines—at this moment he is, in fact, preparing to reject it.

He calls Putin's words "very predictable and manipulative." According to Zelensky, Putin's strategy is to set so many preconditions that "nothing will work or will not work for the longest possible time."
Putin is "actually preparing to reject" the ceasefire proposal, the Ukrainian president added, adding that "we do not impose conditions that complicate things, Russia does that."
"As we have always said, the only one dragging things out, the only one with an unconstructive attitude is Russia," Zelensky continued.
"Putin often does this, he doesn't say "no" directly, but he does it in a way that practically delays everything and makes normal solutions impossible, we think this is just another Russian manipulation," the Ukrainian president added, recalling that, regarding Putin's concerns about the ceasefire control, the Americans said they were "ready to organize control and verification."
