Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis made changes to his cabinet on Friday as his center-right government grapples with ongoing public anger over Greece's deadly rail disaster two years ago.
In a long-awaited move, Kostis Hatzidakis, a former finance minister, has been appointed deputy prime minister, giving him a key oversight role in major government projects. His post at the finance ministry will be taken over by Kyriakos Pierrakakis, who was previously education minister.
Sofia Zacharaki will now head the Ministry of Education, while Domna Michailidou takes over the portfolio of social cohesion and family.
Christos Staikouras will step down as transport minister and be replaced by Christos Dimas, the former deputy finance minister. Meanwhile, Konstantinos Kyranakis, previously deputy minister of digital governance, has been appointed deputy minister responsible for overseeing railway reforms.
Vassilis Kikilias has been appointed as the new Minister of Shipping. His previous post at the Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection will be taken over by Ioannis Kefalogiannis, who previously served as Deputy Minister of Defense.
Stavros Papastavrou has returned to the cabinet, taking over the environment and energy portfolio, replacing Theodoros Skylakakis.
Makis Voridis will serve as minister for migration. The key portfolios of foreign affairs and defense remain unchanged.
The reorganization comes just weeks after hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets demanding justice for the February 28, 2023 train crash near the town of Tempe in central Greece, which claimed 57 lives, most of them students.
It was the country's biggest protest in years and has rattled Mitsotakis' government, which has seen its approval ratings plummet in recent polls. Last week, the government narrowly survived a no-confidence vote on the issue.
