Trump accused him of being a drug trafficker, Colombian president reacts

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has reacted to the threats and accusations of his American counterpart Donald Trump, who continues to accuse him of drug trafficking.

"My name does not appear in the court files for drug trafficking. Stop slandering me, Trump ," the Colombian president wrote via X.

Donald Trump declared on Air Force One that a US military operation in Colombia, similar to the one in neighboring Venezuela, would be a "good idea" and again accused his counterpart Gustavo Petro of drug trafficking in his country, saying he "won't be doing this for too long."

Colombia's social democratic president has sharply criticized the military operation in Venezuela ordered by the Trump administration. He accused the United States of carrying out an "unjustified" kidnapping of his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolas Maduro.

The Venezuelan president was captured by US special forces in Caracas after a series of bombings.

After telling Petros he would do well to "take care of himself," Trump yesterday described his Colombian counterpart as a "sick man" who likes to "take cocaine" and "sell it in the United States."

Colombia's Foreign Ministry described the US president's threats as "unacceptable interference" in the country's internal affairs and demanded "respect."

Since Trump's second term began in January 2025, the two leaders have repeatedly fired shots at each other over immigration policy, tariffs and drug trafficking.

The relationship between the two countries, historically key partners on a military and economic level in the region, is now at an all-time low.
