The chief of staff of the Belarusian opposition leader, Franak Viachorka, said there should be no changes in US policy towards Alexander Lukashenko until political prisoners are released and the strongman leader changes his behavior.

He further added that it was very kind of Trump to call Lukashenko very respected.

" Until we see a real change of policy, no sanctions should be lifted, no recognition should happen. No meeting should happen. It was very kind of Trump to call Lukashenko very respected, but if it helps to release people, such language is okay. Our goal is to release all these people ," Franak Viaçorka told CNN after US President Donald Trump's phone call with Lukashenko today.

Opposition leader Siarhei Tsikhanouski was released from Belarusian prison in June after a visit to Minsk by US special envoy Keith Kellogg.

Viacorka said he hoped that if Trump succeeds with his strategy, all repressions will stop, and Belarus and we will move towards democracy and national dialogue.

But if Lukashenko doesn't change his behavior, Viachorka said: "I'm sure President Trump has not only carrots but also sticks to use."
