A man who was pardoned last week by Donald Trump for his role in the January 6th riots at the Capitol has been shot dead by police.
Matthew Huttle, 42, of Hobart, Indiana, was killed by a Jasper County sheriff's deputy after a heated argument.
State Police, who are investigating the incident, said the deputy was attempting to arrest Mr. Huttle when "a confrontation occurred between the suspect and the officer, resulting in the deputy firing his weapon."
"The investigation shows that the victim had a firearm," the State Police added.
It is not clear what caused the incident.
Patrick Williamson, the Jasper County sheriff, said the officer who shot Mr. Huttle had been placed on administrative leave per standard protocol.
"Our condolences go out to the family of the deceased as any loss of life is traumatic for those who were close to Mr Huttle," Mr Williamson said.
Huttle was pardoned by President Trump after a misdemeanor conviction related to the 2021 riots in Washington, D.C. In 2023, he was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to entering the Capitol.
Mr. Huttle had just been released from prison after a driving violation and traveled with his uncle to Washington to attend the pro-Trump rally. He was inside the Capitol for 16 minutes and recorded it on video.
"He is not a true believer in any political cause," defense attorney Andrew Hemmer said of his client in a court filing.
"Instead he went to the rally because he thought it would be a historic moment and he had nothing better to do after getting out of prison."
