President Donald Trump said today that he believes Iran is "weeks away" from having a nuclear weapon, presenting a doomsday scenario if that were to happen.
He emphasized that the first moment Iran creates a nuclear weapon, it will use it against its enemies without thinking twice.
“ I’ve been saying for 20 years, maybe more, that Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. I’ve been saying that for a long time, and I think they were weeks away from having one. Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, it will cause a lot of destruction. And they will use it. You know, I believe they will use it. Others will not use it. So that’s it. It’s very simple ,” he said.
The comments come at a time when the administration has sent mixed signals about the information it has about Iran's nuclear progress.
CNN reported earlier this week that US intelligence assessments had shown that Iran was not actively pursuing a nuclear weapon and, moreover, was up to three years away from being able to produce and deliver one to a target of its choosing, according to four people familiar with the assessment.
