Donald Trump will use his relationship with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to free WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich from prison.
The former president wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that this would happen after the November elections in the United States, when he is seeking to defeat President Joe Biden and return to the White House.
However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says President Vladimir Putin has had no contact with Donald Trump regarding Gershkovich's release.
Gershkovich was arrested in Russia in March last year on espionage charges that he, the media he works for and the administration of US President Joe Biden have denied.
He has spent more than a year in a Moscow prison, with no date set for a trial.
The Russian president announced in February that his release might be possible in exchange for a Russian jailed in Germany for murder. Peskov repeated the Kremlin's previous statements that contacts with Washington regarding any prisoner exchange should be conducted in complete silence.
