Trump closes airspace, Venezuela reacts: We do not accept colonialist threats

Venezuela reacted sharply on Saturday night, following US President Donald Trump's statement that the US has closed Venezuelan airspace and that ground operations against suspected traffickers will begin "very soon".

In an official statement, the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry called this a “colonialist threat” and an act of “illegal, unjustified and hostile aggression” against the Venezuelan people.

Authorities in Caracas accused Trump of violating the sovereignty of the country's airspace, territorial integrity and aeronautical security, adding that his actions constitute a clear violation of international law and the United Nations Charter. "Venezuela will not accept orders, threats or interference from any foreign power," the statement said, stressing that no external authority has the right to block or condition the use of the country's airspace.

Tensions between the two countries have risen sharply in recent weeks. Trump has long accused President Nicolás Maduro of links to drug trafficking, charges that Maduro categorically denies, considering the American campaign an attempt to oust him from power. At the same time, US anti-drug operations in the Caribbean have intensified, with at least 83 people killed in airstrikes against naval assets in recent weeks.

Caracas' reaction shows that the rhetorical clash is entering a new phase of tension, while the situation remains unclear and with many unknowns about Washington's next steps.
