Georgian authorities arrested Aleksandre Elisashvili, the 47-year-old leader of the opposition party "Citizens", on Saturday on charges of attempting to set fire to the Tbilisi City Court building.
According to the Interior Ministry, Elisashvili forced his way into the courthouse in the early hours of the morning, breaking a window with a hammer and then allegedly pouring gasoline with the intention of starting a fire. During the police intervention, the oppositionist was carrying a firearm and wounded a court official before being arrested. Authorities released footage from the scene showing a pistol on the ground, a bottle of gasoline, a lighter and pieces of broken glass.
Elisashvili is the founder of the Citizens party, part of the opposition coalition Lelo–Strong Georgia, one of the three main opposition blocs. Recently, the authorities have increased pressure on the opposition, while the ruling Georgian Dream party has asked the Constitutional Court to ban three main opposition forces, including the United National Movement and the Akhali coalition.
The event comes in a tense political context, where accusations and clashes between the government and the opposition have increased significantly in recent months, raising concerns about democratic stability in the country.
