Republicans are openly challenging Donald Trump...
President Donald Trump's control over the Republican Party is beginning to weaken.
Even Republicans are now openly challenging him. The man who once ruled the Republican Party like a casino boss can't even force Indiana Republicans to rig the election.
First came the bombing of Iran: a shock that implied that "America First" could also mean "Israel First."
Then came the attempt to hide the Jeffrey Epstein files, a notion so foreign to the MAGA group.
What is common is the feeling that Trump's days are numbered. The question that arises is: "Who gets MAGA when dad can't use the remote anymore?"
There are likely many reasons, but I have singled out five that I think are the most important.
The first reason is that Trump is now a weak man and everyone knows it.
Representative Thomas Massie, R-Ky., made this clear when he warned his colleagues: "Donald Trump may protect you now... but by 2030, he won't be president, and you will have voted to protect pedophiles if you don't vote to release these files."
The second reason is that Trump is not popular. According to a new Reuters poll, his approval rating is just 38%.
According to the same poll, only 20% of American adults - including just 44% of Republicans - approve of Trump's handling of the Epstein files.
Third, Trump is increasingly isolated from the electorate that once honed his political instincts.
The Trump of 2016-2020 used his political instincts at rallies. Now he is physically isolated and increasingly out of touch with others. His inner circle consists of ideologues and billionaires who don't care about the price of milk.
So when Trump insists the economy is booming while hosting Gatsby-themed soirées and demolishing the East Wing of the White House, populists look up at their grocery bills. That creates divergence.
But the fourth reason has to do with his mortality: Trump is the oldest person ever to win the U.S. presidency. He has had two "annual" medical visits this calendar year.
This brings us to the fifth and final reason why cracks are starting to appear: Trump's coalition in 2024 was always like a game of Jenga.
It was a convenient alliance of disparate factions and individuals whose interests converged because Trump’s charisma was like the glue that held the incompatible pieces together. But as this binding force weakens, contradictions become clear and open warfare is inevitable.
We are seeing that MAGA is beginning to understand that the Trump era is ending and that the next battle is about who will replace him when he is gone./ Adapted from "Pamphlet", taken from "Timesfreepress"
