US President Donald Trump ruled out the possibility of an escalation of tensions with Cuba, while commenting for the first time on the criminal indictment filed in the US against former Cuban President Raul Castro.
" There will be no escalation. I don't think it's necessary. That country is falling apart ," Trump told reporters on his return from Connecticut.
The US president also described as "a very important moment" the criminal prosecution of 94-year-old Raul Castro, who succeeded his brother Fidel Castro as Cuba's leader.
" It's a very important moment, not only for Cuban-Americans, but also for people who came from Cuba, who want to go back to Cuba and see their families ," Trump said.
Raul Castro is accused by the US justice system of involvement in the shooting down of two planes carrying Cuban immigrants in 1996 by a Cuban air force fighter jet. At that time, Castro held the position of Cuba's defense minister.
