United States President Donald Trump left open the possibility of sending American troops to the ground in Iran, if such action were deemed necessary.
In an interview with the New York Post, Trump stated that he does not follow the traditional formula of American presidents who rule out ground engagement in advance. "I never say 'there will be no troops on the ground.' I say 'maybe they won't be needed,' or 'if they are needed,'" he said.
The statements come at a time when polls show a split in American public opinion. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted over the weekend, 43% of Americans oppose attacks on Iran. However, Trump said his decisions do not depend on polls.
"I don't think the polls are low. But even if they were, it's not a matter of polls. You have to do what's right," he declared, adding that the US cannot allow Iran to possess nuclear weapons.
Trump also said he believes public opinion is more supportive than formal polls indicate. "I think people are very impressed with the actions of the American military. There is a silent majority," the president said.
His statements signal that the US administration is keeping all military options open as tensions with Iran continue to escalate.
