US President Donald Trump has defended his economic policies and blamed his predecessor Joe Biden for the state of the country he said he inherited when he returned to the White House. Speaking from the Oval Office for less than 20 minutes, the president declared that he inherited a disaster, but that now America is back.
"Eleven months ago, I inherited a mess and I'm fixing it. This high inflation happened during a Democratic administration and that was when we first started hearing the word affordability," Trump said, mentioning former President Biden more than six times by name throughout the short speech.
Trump focused largely on domestic issues, attacking Democrats and listing what he called his administration's achievements in just 11 months, from the safest border in history to falling prices and wages.
"Now, under our leadership, prices are falling faster and faster. Democratic politicians also increased the cost of food, but we are solving this too. I am fixing things, we will have an economic boom like never before," the head of the White House emphasized.
In foreign policy, Trump claimed to have "solved eight wars" and brought peace to the Middle East, without mentioning the conflict in Ukraine or the situation with Venezuela.
"I have resolved eight wars. I resolved the war in Gaza, bringing peace to the Middle East for the first time in years," he said.
He acknowledged that the economy faces challenges, amid rising unemployment and inflation above the Federal Reserve's target, but reiterated that there will soon be a new central bank leader who supports low interest rates.
Trump also announced a $1,776 million "warrior dividend" for the military, noting that the tariffs have brought trillions of dollars in investment and that "this is just the beginning."
