US President Donald Trump is optimistic that he will reach a trade deal with China, White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said, amid an escalating trade war between the two economic giants that is roiling markets.
"The president has made it clear that he is open to a deal with China. If China continues to retaliate, it is not good for China," the spokeswoman said. However, she did not explain why Trump is "optimistic" when a reporter asked about it.
Tariffs imposed on imported Chinese products remain at 145%, she added.
Referring to other countries, Levitt said there are already more than 15 proposals on the table and Trump hopes deals will be reached before the 90-day tariff suspension expires. When that time period ends, "the president will make his decisions," she said.
"All options on the table" for Iran
