The well-known political scientist and analyst, Janusz Bugajski, spoke about the latest international developments.
He analyzed the controversial statements of the new US president, Donald Trump, about the possibility of buying Greenland and the idea of joining Canada with the United States.
Bugajski estimated that these statements are impossible and explained the reasons behind them. He pointed out that Trump often makes comments to create an impression and that this is part of his political style.
"Trump often says things to impress and often repeats things he's heard. This is his policy", he said for Balkan Talks on Euronews Albania.
"He is a figure who thinks he can make deals, transactions and compromises, and has a very unpredictable way of operating. Also, he is quick to take offense and sees foreign policy as a personal matter."
As for Greenland, Bugajski estimates that Trump may intend to bring the island closer to NATO due to the increased activity of Russia and China in the Arctic, including the exploration of mineral and natural resources.
"I think that Trump intends to increase the military presence in Greenland and bring it closer to NATO. Buying Greenland is an extreme idea and is unlikely to happen,” he explained.
Regarding Canada, Bugajski called the union of this country with the USA impossible.
"There is no way Canada will become the 51st US state because that would lead to a Democratic majority in Congress, something Republicans don't want either," he added.
Bugajski further explained that Trump may be putting pressure on Canada in some areas, such as trade and defense spending.
"Trump is putting pressure on Canada, especially on its military spending, as Canada only invests 2% of its budget on NATO," he said.
