US President Donald Trump spoke publicly for the first time at a press conference from his Mar-a-Lago residence today about the military attack that toppled Nicolás Maduro's regime in Venezuela.
In a strong-toned speech, Trump described the intervention as one of the most powerful military actions of the US military since World War II, comparing it to the most iconic operations in modern US history.
" Today, late last night and this morning, by my direct order, the United States Armed Forces conducted an extraordinary military operation in the capital of Venezuela ," he declared.
Trump said the offensive took place "on land, in the air and at sea," and was aimed at attacking a heavily defended military fortress in the heart of Caracas, from where Maduro had run his regime.
" This was an attack that people haven't seen since World War II. It was one of the most amazing, most effective and powerful demonstrations of American military strength and capability in the history of our country ," Trump told reporters.
The purpose of the operation, according to the president, was clear: “ To bring the illegitimate dictator Nicolás Maduro to justice .” The Venezuelan leader was arrested and is now on a US warship en route to New York, where he is expected to face serious charges of narco-terrorism.
