President Trump has released for the first time a photo from the moment of the arrest of Nicolás Maduro, the now deposed leader of Venezuela.
In the image, he is seen with his hands handcuffed, a bottle of water in his hand, black blocking glasses and sound-isolating headphones, a standard technique to neutralize the perception of being detained during transport.
Maduro is sitting in a locked room on a US warship, which Washington authorities say is en route to New York. There, he is expected to face formal charges previously filed by the US Department of Justice for narco-terrorism, international drug trafficking and high-level corruption.
The photo, which appears to have been taken shortly after the arrest, represents a historic and symbolic moment for Latin America: the end of a long era of Chavismo authoritarianism and the beginning of a new, still unclear transition.
The sight of Maduro, isolated and equipped with headphones and blackout glasses, shows the high level of security and control being implemented during this operation. For the Venezuelan opposition and diaspora, the image represents a long-awaited liberation; for the regime's remaining supporters, it is a strong moral and political blow.
In the US, President Trump has declared that "decisions are being made about the future leadership of Venezuela," while the name of Maria Corina Machado is increasingly mentioned as a transition figure. Meanwhile, no information has been given on the whereabouts of Maduro's wife, Cilia Flores.
