The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has ordered generals to defend America from 'war from within'.
Trump presented his controversial plans to send federal troops to US cities he considers "dangerous" to top military generals on Tuesday, declaring that the United States is "under occupation from within."
In a speech to senior military officers at the Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia, Trump said that the military's job is not only to protect against external threats, but also to fight against the "enemy within" within the country.
"It's a war from within. We are under occupation from within," the president said, referring to the situation in major Democratic-run cities like New York, Chicago and San Francisco, which he described as "in bad shape."
Trump threatened to regulate these cities one by one and mentioned that he had proposed using them as “training bases” for the National Guard.
This statement comes after his order to send federal troops to Portland, Oregon, a decision that was strongly opposed by the mayor and governor of this state, both Democrats, who had not requested the presence of federal forces.
Trump cited his call with Governor Tina Kotek, saying the city was "burning" and that he would control the situation, despite local opposition.
In his speech, Trump also referred to calls to combat what he called a "smart culture" in the military, but the generals' reaction was measured and unenthusiastic, especially when the president talked about sending troops to cities like Chicago and Portland.
The atmosphere in the hall was unusual for Trump, who usually relies on more enthusiastic audiences. He himself noticed the silence and joked: "I've never been in a room this quiet before," writes American media ABC News.
