Turkey supports Hamas, Erdogan: They cannot force us to declare it a terrorist

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said that Ankara "strongly supports" the Palestinian group, Hamas, which is declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.
"No one can force us to declare Hamas a terrorist organization," he said during a speech in Istanbul on March 9.

"Turkey is a country that talks openly with the leaders of Hamas and strongly supports them," he added.

Endogan has been one of the harshest critics of Israel since the war in Gaza began.

The war in the Gaza Strip began after Hamas attacks in southern Israel on October 7, when Palestinian extremists killed nearly 1,200 people and kidnapped nearly 250 others.

Israel has responded with repeated ground and air strikes, and according to the Health Ministry in Hamas-led Gaza, more than 30,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed in the Palestinian enclave so far.

Erdogan has called Israel a "terrorist state" and accused it of committing "genocide" in the Gaza Strip. /REL
