Turkish authorities continued operations across the country today against suspected members of the Islamic State, arresting 125 people in simultaneous raids in 25 provinces.
Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the raids were carried out today in Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Bursa and Yalova. The Islamic State has carried out a series of deadly attacks in Turkey, one of the biggest being a gun attack on an Istanbul nightclub during New Year's celebrations in 2017, in which 39 people were killed.
Turkey has carried out similar large-scale operations against suspected members in previous years. The latest action comes amid a resurgence in the group, marked by a recent Islamic State-inspired attack in Australia and attacks on US forces in neighboring Syria.
The US military said Tuesday that nearly 25 Islamic State operatives were killed or captured in Syria this month after an ambush that killed two American soldiers and an American civilian translator.
Over the past week, Turkish police have detained hundreds of suspected Islamic State members in raids aimed at preventing potential attacks during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
