Sinaloa Cartel boss and co-founder Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada was arrested Thursday by US authorities in El Paso, Texas, along with the eldest son of his partner, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
The sensational arrest was announced by US authorities, marking a new chapter in the fight against organized crime groups that traffic narcotics in the United States.
But the American media report that the arrest of "El Mayo" came after the cooperation of the son of "El Chapo", Guzman Lopez, with the American authorities.
According to the "New York Times" and "Wall Street Journal", Zambada was tricked by Guzmán to get on a private plane, to see some runways in Mexico, from where planes full of drugs would depart for the United States. . But in fact the plane ended up in El Paso, where Homeland Security and FBI agents were waiting.
Also, "Fox News" reported that "El Chapo's" son betrayed his father's old partner and friend, as he thought "El Mayo" was responsible for his father's arrest.
Zambada lived a quiet life in Mexico, unlike the luxurious life of "El Chapo". He was reportedly in constant communication with US authorities to surrender, but never did. In a rare media interview in 2010, "El Mayo" is quoted as saying that "I will kill myself before I surrender to the police."
Guzman Lopez is expected to be transferred to Chicago, where the trial against him will take place, while Zambada will go to New York.
