El Chapo's son, Joaquin Guzman Lopez, was also arrested along with him.
Zambada has been on the run for decades and is considered the world's biggest narcotics trafficker.
At El Chapo's trial in 2019, his lawyers claimed that El Mayo was the real head of the organization. They accused El Mayo of corrupting the entire Mexican government in order to live free.

Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada - Is a Mexican drug trafficker who leads the infamous Sinaloa Cartel after the arrest of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, after previously running the field operation of international cocaine trafficking. For decades Zambada has escaped Mexican and American justice, having been wanted since 1998.
The tripling of the figure that the US offers for Zambada happened in 2021. El Mayo took over the leadership of the Cartel after the arrest of El Chapo, but for decades he was his right-hand man.
"Mexican cartels produce narcotics in industrial quantities," Robert Bell, DEA Special Agent in Chicago, told local television station Abc7Chicago. "The difference between him and El Chapo is that El Chapo has been younger and more mobile, while El Mayo has always stayed behind the scenes of the cartel. Unlike other key figures who have been arrested or killed, he remains free," said Ed Farrell, former US marshal in Chicago, some time ago.
Before he started drug trafficking, Zambada was a farmer. Gradually he increased his presence in the American market, focusing mainly on Chicago, and then his "business" became involved in the Guadalajara Cartel, the first real Mexican drug cartel, under the leadership of Miguel Ángel Félix Gallardo .
After the arrest of El Chapo, he entrusted his sons to El Mayo, with whom the latter divided the business 50 to 50. But the life of luxury of the sons of El Chapo, Ivan and Jesus Alfredo Guzman, who have been sanctioned as operatives of The Sinaloa Cartel and the US Department of the Treasury have caused their relationship to be tense.
US authorities say the Sinaloa Cartel is the largest supplier of narcotics to the US, mainly cocaine and fentanyl. The latter is considered the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18-45.
