Washington on alert: Russia has secured an anti-satellite weapon

The White House publicly confirmed on Thursday that Russia has secured a "disturbing" anti-satellite weapon, but said it could not cause "direct physical destruction" to Earth.

White House spokesman John Kirby said US intelligence officials have information that Russia has provided the weapon, but added that such a weapon is not yet operational.

US officials are analyzing the data they have been provided about this new technological weapon and have consulted with their allies and partners on the matter.

" First, this is not an active weapon, and while Russia's efforts to acquire this specific weapon are troubling, it does not pose an immediate threat to the safety of others. We're not talking about a weapon that can be used to attack people, or to cause physical damage to Earth ," Kirby said.

Russia has dismissed US concerns about this weapon. In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described reports of Russia's new weapon as a ruse to get the US Congress to support the Ukraine aid bill.

" It is clear that Washington is trying to force Congress to vote on the aid bill in any way possible. Let's see what trick the White House will use , "said Peskov.

This weapon is space-based and would violate the international space treaty, which more than 130 countries, including Russia, have signed. The White House said it will seek to talk with the Russians directly about this issue./ REL
