Ukraine said on Saturday it was ready to make significant compromises in its peace proposals with Russia, ahead of President Volodymyr Zelensky's meeting with US and European officials in Berlin. Zelensky made the statement to reporters via WhatsApp, underlining that security guarantees from the US, Europe and other allies, rather than direct NATO membership, are one of Ukraine's key compromises at the negotiating table.
" From the very beginning, Ukraine's desire was to join NATO, these are real security guarantees. Some partners from the US and Europe did not support this direction ," he said.
" So, today, bilateral security guarantees between Ukraine and the US, Article 5-like guarantees for us from the US, and security guarantees from European colleagues, as well as from other countries - Canada, Japan - are an opportunity to prevent another Russian invasion ," Zelensky added.
Zelensky also stressed that a ceasefire based on the current front lines between Ukrainian and Russian forces could be a just and lasting solution. This marks an apparent tactical move by Ukraine as it seeks to create a basis for broader peace negotiations.
Representatives of the administration of US President Donald Trump, Steve Whitkov and Jared Kushner, have arrived in Berlin to hold talks with Zelensky about a final peace plan, according to reports from the Associated Press. The aim of this meeting is to find a formula to end the war with Russia, in cooperation with the United States and major European countries.
Zelensky confirmed that he will meet with US representatives in Berlin today, as part of planned meetings aimed at advancing the peace proposal.
He announced that he has not yet received a definitive response from Washington on the changes that Ukraine has proposed to the American peace plan, which was also agreed upon with European partners. Zelensky said that he has received "numerous messages" from the negotiating team and is ready for the dialogue launched today, which also marks what he called "Ukraine-America Day in Berlin."
