New South Wales State Police announced that they responded immediately after several alerts and that two suspects were neutralized, while the security operation is still ongoing. Authorities have urged citizens to avoid the area and stay sheltered.
Footage shared on social media shows two men dressed in black shooting into a crowd on the beach. At least 12 shots are heard in the video, as people run away in panic. Other footage shows people lying on the ground, next to a white vehicle and around camping tables. Their condition has not yet been officially confirmed.
According to evidence, the two attackers then moved to a bridge connecting the parking lot to the beach area, continuing to shoot until they were confronted by law enforcement and shot by police.
Witnesses described scenes of chaos and fear. “We thought it was fireworks, but it was something much worse,” Elizabeth Mealey, a former journalist who was at the Icebergs restaurant near the beach, told ABC News. “People started running, no one knew what was happening. It was a long time before we heard the sirens. It was real chaos and extremely scary,” she said.
According to the BBC, a public event for the first day of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah, called “Chanukah by the Sea 2025”, was taking place in the area, organised by the Chabad of Bondi Jewish Centre. The event was planned to be held near a children's playground and included entertainment and family activities. Some of the participants are believed to be among the injured, while many others dispersed or took cover to escape the gunfire.
