From Russian veterans to world oil, two paths to a conflict that risks engulfing the globe...
Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump have clashed at a distance over the war in Ukraine and the future of the global order.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, at a meeting with the heads of parliamentary groups in the State Duma, declared that the future leadership of Russia will come from war veterans. According to him, only those who are not afraid to sacrifice their lives for the homeland can lead the country. Putin emphasized that hundreds of former soldiers have already been elected to local offices and that “these people will be the ones who will replace us.” In this way, he presented the war as a kind of school of leadership and sacrifice for the younger generations.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump, in a press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, used harsh language against Moscow and expressed his personal frustration with Putin. “ Russia is killing a lot of people and losing even more. Russian forces are suffering greater losses than the Ukrainians ,” Trump declared, adding that he is morally obligated to help resolve the conflict. He recalled that if he were still in power, the war would never have started, and warned that its dimensions have been so great that they could have led to a Third World War, which would be a “shame on humanity.”
Trump also linked the resolution of the conflict to the global economy, noting that a drop in oil prices would force Putin to back down. “ If oil prices fall, he will have no choice but to stop the war ,” he said.
In this stark contrast, Putin glorifies the sacrifice of life for the Fatherland as a source of political legitimacy, while Trump calculates the cost in blood and the world economy. Their clash reflects two different visions of the future of war and the international order: a Russia that builds its power on the myth of veterans, and an America that aims to resolve the crisis through diplomatic pressure and economic shock. /Pamphlet
