The death of the President of Iran, the White House: Ebrahim Raisi had

The White House has also stressed that despite the regret over Rais' death, nothing changes the fact that he had blood on his hands.

The White House has commented on the death of the Iranian president, as it has emphasized that Ebrahim Raisi had "blood on his hands".

State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a press conference that President Raisi was a brutal participant in the oppression of the Iranian people for nearly 4 decades.

"He was involved in numerous horrific human rights abuses, including playing a key role in the killing of thousands of political prisoners in 1988. Some of the worst human rights abuses occurred during his tenure as president, especially the abuses of the rights of women and girls in Iran. That being said, we are sorry for any loss of life. We don't want to see anyone die in a helicopter crash ," Miller said.

The White House has also stressed that despite the regret over Rais' death, nothing changes the fact that he had blood on his hands.

"But this does not change the reality of his record, as a judge and as the president of Iran, the fact that he had blood on his hands," the White House said.

Iranian protesters have expressed "joy" over the death of President Ebrahim Raisi, who was dubbed the "Butcher of Tehran". Meanwhile, some men were clutching prayer beads and crying, while women wearing black umbrellas gathered together holding photos of the dead leader.

We recall that Ebrahim Raisi and Hossein Amir Abdollahian were killed in a helicopter accident on Sunday, while the country entered a five-day period of mourning.

Funeral ceremonies will also be held today in the northeastern city of Tabriz and Qom, Iran's Vatican City and home of the main Shia seminaries. All government offices and businesses will be closed.

The three-day ceremonies will conclude on Thursday with the burial of President Ebrahim Raisi in Mashhad, the city where he was born. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will pray over their bodies on Wednesday.

We remember that Ebrahim Raisi was traveling together with other members of the government cabinet, as they lost all their lives, after the helicopter they were traveling with crashed in the north-west of Iran, while the country entered a five-day period of mourning.

Who was Raisi?

Raisi, 63, is a hardliner who previously led the country's judiciary. He is seen as Khamenei's protégé and some analysts have suggested he could replace the 85-year-old leader after his death or resignation.

Raisi won Iran's 2021 presidential election, a vote that saw the lowest turnout in the Islamic Republic's history. Raisi has been sanctioned by the US in part for his involvement in the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988 at the end of the bloody Iran-Iraq war.

Under Raisi, Iran now enriches uranium to near-weapons-grade levels and thwarts international inspections. Iran has armed Russia in its war against Ukraine, as well as launched a massive drone and missile attack on Israel amid its war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. It has also continued to arm proxy groups in the Middle East, such as Yemen's Houthi rebels and Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, mass protests in the country have been raging for years. The most recent involved the death in 2022 of Mahsa Amini, a woman who had been arrested earlier for allegedly not wearing a hijab or headscarf, as the authorities wanted. The months-long security crackdown that followed the demonstrations killed more than 500 people and saw over 22,000 arrested.

In March, a United Nations panel of inquiry found that Iran was responsible for the "physical violence" that led to Amini's death.
