The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is opposing Iran's near-complete closure of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that the main shipping route for oil and gas has never been within Iran's control to close or restrict it.

Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the UAE's minister of industry and head of the state-owned Abu Dhabi Oil Company, declared on social media that any attempt to block Hormuz is a threat to the global economy.

" Any attempt to do this is not a regional issue; it is the disruption of a global economic lifeline and a direct threat to the energy, food and health security of every nation ," he said.

Since the US and Israel launched military action against Iran on February 28, Tehran has threatened to set ships on fire if they try to use the waterway. This has led to a virtual halt in shipments and has driven up global oil and gas prices.

The UAE's Minister of Industry stressed that they would not allow such a thing, as it is dangerous and unacceptable.

"Setting such a precedent is illegal, dangerous and unacceptable. The world simply cannot afford it and must not allow it ," he concluded.
