Search and rescue operations continue with intensity in northern Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, which hit the country on Wednesday evening, local time, and caused one of the biggest natural disasters in recent decades.
According to Venezuelan authorities, about 235 deaths have been confirmed so far, while at least 4,300 people have been injured. Thousands more are still missing and emergency teams continue to search under the rubble of collapsed buildings, hoping to find survivors.
Health Minister Carlos Alvarado told state television that around 235 people arrived at health facilities without signs of life or died during transportation.
Authorities warn that the toll remains provisional, as many isolated communities have not yet been reached by rescue teams due to extensive damage to infrastructure, roads and bridges.
Residents search for relatives under rubble
Images from northern Venezuelan cities show collapsed buildings, streets covered in debris and hundreds of residents searching for their relatives among the rubble.
In many areas, residents have launched the first rescue operations themselves before the arrival of professional teams, while emergency forces are using specialized tools to locate people suspected of being trapped.
One of the stories that has brought hope is the rescue of a woman from the rubble of the "Don Pepe" building in the Chacao area of Caracas. She was pulled out alive more than 24 hours after the building collapsed.
Hospitals in emergency mode
The healthcare system has been put under extraordinary pressure.
According to the Ministry of Health, over 4,300 wounded have received medical assistance, while hospitals in Caracas and northern regions are filled beyond their capacity.
Authorities have set up field hospitals to cope with the influx of patients, while many injured people are being treated in temporary facilities outside hospital buildings for security reasons.
Over 70 thousand families affected
Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced that more than 70,000 families have been affected in the coastal state of La Guaira alone.
According to him, over 100 buildings have completely collapsed in this region, which is considered among the most affected by earthquakes.

Gjeneral-lejtnanti i Trupave Detare të SHBA-së, Kevin Jarrard, mbërriti në Karakas për të koordinuar ndihmën amerikane në terren.
Komanda Jugore e SHBA-së (SOUTHCOM) publikoi pamje nga përgatitjet e forcave ushtarake, ku shfaqen mjete transporti dhe pajisje që do të përdoren për dërgimin e personelit, ndihmave dhe logjistikës në zonat e goditura.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and stated that the United Nations system has mobilized to support the Venezuelan authorities.
The World Bank Group also announced that it is in contact with the government to assess the forms of technical and financial assistance that can be offered to cope with the consequences of the disaster.
