US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth began his press conference at the Pentagon by saying that for "47 long years", the Iranian regime has waged a "vicious and unilateral war against America".
"We didn't start this war, but under President Trump, we are ending it," he said.
The Secretary of Defense said today that the war against Iran is not comparable to the Iraq War, adding that the United States will not get caught in the same nation-building quagmire it found itself in two decades ago.
"This is not Iraq," Hegseth said from the Pentagon. "This is not endless. I was there for both. Our generation knows better, and so does this president. He called the last 20 years of nation-building wars stupid, and he's right."
"This is the opposite," he added. "This operation is a clear, devastating, decisive mission: Destroy the missile threat, destroy the Navy, no nuclear weapons."
The United States and its partners have launched Operation Epic Fury, one of the largest, most complex, and most devastating military offensives the world has ever seen.
"We have hit hundreds of targets in Iran, including Revolutionary Guard facilities, Iranian air defense systems. It was just announced that we destroyed nine ships, all within minutes. The former supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Khamenei, is dead.
This wretched and evil man had the blood of hundreds and even thousands of Americans on his hands and was responsible for the massacre of thousands of innocent people in all countries. All over Iran, the voices of the Iranian people could be heard cheering and celebrating in the streets when his death was announced.
The entire military command is gone as well, and many of them want to surrender to save their lives. They want immunity. They are calling in thousands. Combat operations continue at this time in full force, and will continue until all of our objectives are achieved. We have very strong objectives." Trump said.
