The arrest of her son on the charge of manslaughter puts the member of the High Prosecution Council Nurihan Seiti in a difficult position, amid public accusations that her son used her name to gain benefits. Rei Meta, the son of the member of the Supreme Prosecution Council Nurihan Seitu (Meta) was arrested on Monday on the charge of manslaughter, after he allegedly punched 55-year-old Armando Meshau to death.
Officially, the police announced that there was a clash between two people for "weak motives", but officers aware of the investigation told BIRN that Meta is suspected of having served as a realtor for the victim for a problem with the properties he had in Vlora and that Meshau did not had given him the reward.
BIRN learned from the investigation team that Meta allegedly used the name of his mother, a member of the Supreme Prosecution Council, to extract benefits, claiming that he could solve property problems. In the case that brought the conflict, Armando Meshau, the victim, claimed that he had found the agreement with the third party himself and refused to give Meta an apartment that would be his payment for the mediation.
This brought the clash in a chancellery and after the verbal argument, the two people were shot with fists that brought down and then the death of Meshaut. Police officers aware of the investigation said that Meta has denied this. He claimed that he punched Meshau in self-defense and that it was the builder who cursed and shot him first.
But the arrest of Meta and the accusations that he used his mother's name put the member of the High Council of Prosecution in difficulty. Asked by BIRN, Mimoza Koçiu, adviser for the media at the High Inspector of Justice, said that they were following the case.
"This case is being pursued by the ILD", said Koçiu.
The member of the KLP did not answer BIRN's questions about the event, nor whether she would take any position after it. Asked if the case affected perceptions of a fair investigation, given that the family of a member of the KLP is being investigated, the head of this institution, Alfred Balla, denied the possibility of influence.
"Prosecutors today are completely independent and no one can influence their investigative work, which is controlled by the court," he said. Balla said that the incident was "serious and sad", but added that the accused person was over 30 years old and did not live with his parents.
BIRN learned that in order to clarify the circumstances of the murder, the police summoned 10 people on Monday and Tuesday, including eyewitnesses and relatives of the victim and the suspected perpetrator./BIRN
