He killed his partner years ago, former Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius is released from prison on parole

Former Paralympic star Oscar Pistorius has been released on bail from prison in South Africa, nearly 11 years after he killed his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.

He shot him several times in 2013, and later said that he had mistaken him for a thief.

Pistorius, now 37, was convicted of murder in 2015 after an appeals court overturned an earlier verdict of manslaughter.

He will live under observation and strict conditions until his sentence expires in 2029.

Under South African law, all convicts are eligible to be considered for parole after serving half of their total prison sentence.

Pistorius has been in prison since October 2014.
