The American diplomat of the National Security Council: The attitude of the USA

The spokesman for the National Security Council at the White House, John Kirby, told VOA that Washington's approach to Europe and the Balkan region has not changed. Mr. Kirky made these comments in response to a question as a reaction to an editorial in the Washington Post newspaper, which states that President Biden followed the policy of "supporting the authoritarian Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in an effort to remove him from Russia ".

"This stance looks more and more like a failure," says the Washington Post.

Mr Kirby made no further comment.

Recently, after the early elections, Serbia has been engulfed by a wave of protests by the opposition, which accuses the government of massive irregularities and manipulations in the December 17 process.

In the editorial article of the "Washington Post" it is stated that Mr. Vučić and Prime Minister Ana Brnabić "accused the West for the protests" and called them "an attempt to overthrow the government".

"By fomenting resentment against the West and aligning with Moscow, Mr. Vučić scores points with nationalist groups, while labeling his democratic opponents as servants of foreign interests," the editorial continues.

The 'Washington Post' says that Mr. Vučić repeatedly assures Western officials in private meetings that he "is making the best possible efforts for his 'recalcitrant' nation to be part of the European Union and that he is their partner, alone and reliable".

According to the 'Washington Post', the Biden administration based its conciliatory policy on the guarantees that Mr. Vucic has given them privately.

"Although several dangerous crises over the past year in neighboring Kosovo have had Serbian fingerprints, the United States has avoided clearly blaming one side, preferring to call for calm," the article points out. /VOA
